When using gel coats or polyester and vinyl ester resins, styrene is the recommended thinner. All polyester and vinyl ester resins contain styrene monomer. Although it’s usually not necessary, Thinning resins and gel coats can be performed for applications where a lower viscosity is desired (spraying or infusing). Marine Coat One recommends adding styrene at no more than 5% to maintain the resin or gel coat’s physical properties.
